Military Families at Destin High School

At Destin High School, we are proud to serve the men and women of our Armed Forces and their families. We recognize the unique challenges that come with military life, and we are committed to ensuring a smooth educational journey for every military-connected student who joins our Shark Family.

Transition Planning for Military Families

Moving from one duty station to another can be a significant transition. Destin High School offers individualized transition support to military students, ensuring they adjust quickly and confidently. Our Student-to-Student (S2S) program, led by our Military Point of Contact, Ms. Kathie Lake, connects incoming students with peer mentors who help them acclimate socially and academically. Families transitioning to Destin High School should reach out to Ms. Lake in advance to get connected!

Academic Planning for Military Families

Our school counselors work closely with each military family to review transcripts, plan courses, and align schedules to maintain academic progress. Because we honor the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, we ensure that academic records, placement, and graduation requirements are handled consistently and fairly. We also offer open enrollment for military families, so transitions do not delay enrollment. Please connect with a school counselor if you are inbound to the Destin area and have questions!

Resources & Educational Opportunities

Military-connected students have access to a full range of educational opportunities, including advanced coursework, dual enrollment, internship opportunities, and extracurricular programs. Our team is committed to ensuring that students are well-equipped for success from the moment they arrive.

Student-Led Transition Program

The Student-to-Student (S2S) program at Destin High School offers direct peer support to new students. Through this program, current students guide newcomers around campus, answer questions, and help them get involved in school activities. This student-led effort ensures a welcoming environment for every new Shark.

Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Services

We proudly provide Exceptional Student Education (ESE) services to meet the needs of all learners. Our ESE staff works closely with families to develop individualized plans that ensure students with special needs receive the necessary accommodations and support for academic growth.

Military Recognition Events

Destin High School actively celebrates our military families. Each April, we “Purple Up” in honor of the Month of the Military Child. We also recognize our military connected families throughout the year, acknowledging the service and sacrifice of our students and their families.

Supporting Mental Health

We understand that military students may face unique social and emotional challenges. Destin High School provides direct access to a part-time Social/Emotional Health Counselor on campus to support students with personal or family-related challenges. Additionally, our counseling team connects families with local and military-specific resources to ensure ongoing support and care.

Our Commitment

Destin High School is proud to stand in support of our military families. We are committed to ensuring that every child has the tools, support, and encouragement they need to succeed academically, socially, and personally.
